10 Link Building Secrets

Let me make it clear to start with, there are none, or at least none that I'm going to share here. The bottom line is, just as at conference, as soon as "we" the SEO's divulge a specific tactic it will either get jumped on by the search engines, or jumped on by our pears and burned to the ground through over use. Catch me over a beer and you'll find out much more, if you are buying :-)

To emphasise this there is a good article over at OutSpokenMedia that pretty much says it all. Link building to many of us hasn't changed, the cowboys with their quick fixes are gradually being picked off. The regime is now all about building for consistency, SEO is no different to what a PR house would do off line

So this is what you need to know about link building
  1. Yes you can automate emails, spam blogs, create site wides but do you really think the Search Engines haven't got that one nailed.
  2. For the love of god forget reciprocals, any email invites to you will no doubt be weighted to exclude link juice back
  3. Directories are old hat and to a large extent devalued
  4. Anyone offering links for next to nothing, well there is no such thing as a free lunch in this game
  5. Don't spam blogs or forums, it's been so done and isn't worth the effort
so here are the do's, you are not going to like this because it involves work
  1. produce content, widget, app, forum, white papers, tutorials, videos that people will want to be involved with and link to AKA "link bait"
  2. produce content for external promotion through guest blogging, article/ news creation, video promotion, publicity stunts
  3. Promote your activities using social media
  4. Promote your activities through business networks
  5. Viral market your contacts /  followers / clients with offers / promotions which attract them to promote your site to others
Not what you were expecting? Sounds like hard work? That is SEO and done right it is a lot more than code and spam!
