Amateur sleuth uses Google to solve mysteryA single mother out-foxed detectives in the hunt to solve the mystery of a ‘dead man’ who walked into a police station in the UK saying he was a missing person.
The woman - who wanted to remain anonymous – did a simple Google search on John Darwin after he turned up five years after apparently drowning.
The amateur sleuth used the search engine to try and find out information about the disappearance of John Darwin because she was suspicious of the circumstances which lead to his mysterious reappearance.
By doing a simple search using the words ‘John, Anne and Panama’, the woman came across a date-stamped picture of John Darwin and his wife Anne taken a year ago in the Central American country – four years after Mr Darwin’s disappearance.
The woman forwarded the picture to police and a tabloid newspaper, which turned the mystery into a fraud investigation, as Mr Darwin was declared dead after his disappearance in March 2002 and his wife pocketed his life insurance.
The amateur sleuth said she turned to Google in the hunt for the Darwin’s because nobody can simply vanish in this day and age and there has to be something, some sign.
