Berners-Lee optimistic about web future
World Wide Web inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee believes that the internet is still in its infancy and is optimistic about its future, as he discussed his creation ahead of the 15th anniversary of the net.
Berners-Lee created HTML in the early 1990s while working for the nuclear physics lab CERN near Geneva.
Sir Tim eventually named the project the World Wide Web and it is approaching 15 years since the code was unleashed into the public domain.
He said that the web had been a tremendous tool for people to do a lot of good even though you could find bad stuff out there.
The development of the web, he added, had been a fantastic experience and that we had really only started to explore its possibilities.
Fellow web pioneer at CERN, Robert Cailliau, said that the decision to release the code into the public domain was not straightforward.
He said the development team had to convince CERN that the web was going to take off- therefore it couldn't hold on to it and the best thing was to give it away.
Things may have turned out differently, he added, had CERN decided to put a price on it like the University of Minnesota had done with rival hyperlink system Gopher.
