Brits are Europe’s leading social networkers
The UK has topped a poll of Europe’s most prolific social networkers. A study by comScore found that 80% of internet users in Britain regularly visit websites such as Bebo, MySpace and Facebook.
Figures from comScore show that around a fifth of visits to these sites came from Brits. There were 127.3m unique European visitors to social networking websites in August and 24.9m of which came from the UK.
The study also highlights the number of visits and the length of time people spend on these websites.
Brits spent 5.8 hours per month on social networking sites and made 23.3 visits in August. This is higher than France and Germany whose visitors averaged two hours per month and with 3.1 hours respectively.
The results present some interesting challenges for SEO’s going forward and comScore’s EVP of International Markets, Bob Ivins, explained the 80%-20% rule applied to social networking sites.
He said the averages provide a valuable summary of the behaviour of visitors to European social networking sites, but as the segmentation of this audience shows, there is a lot more that smart media planners need to know. As an example, about 80% of all online activity at social networking sites can be attributed to only 20% of visitors.
