Brits are social networking obsessivesBritons are Europe’s leading social networking addicts according to a report from the UK’s communication regulator. Ofcom has found that people spend more time on websites such as Facebook and MySpace than their European neighbours.
In a study of online habits, Ofcom found that one in four adults regularly log onto social networking websites. It found that, on average, Britons spend 5.3 hours per month on them and return 23 times per month.
When Ofcom compared the gender split it found an exact 50-50 division - except in the 18-34 age group, where far more women are surfing the net.
Researchers studied trends in eight European countries as well as others including Japan, Canada and America and they also looked beyond the internet at other ways in which the public consume information.
It found Europeans watch less TV than the Americans and Japanese. In the UK, the average is 25.2 hours a week, or 3.5 hours a day. That is less than Italy and Spain but more than Germany and Ireland.
People in the UK also listen to more radio than in any of the other eleven countries surveyed, while the medium is least popular in Japan.
Ofcom chief executive, Ed Richards, said the report shows that convergence, bundling and the move to digital communications is a powerful global phenomenon.
