Cutts gives newbies SEO lowdown
Eminent search expert and Google engineer, Matt Cutts, has been dishing out advice to USA Today readers, who are unfamiliar with the term search engine optimisation and can't work out why their website is getting nowhere in Google's rankings.
To businesses, especially small enterprises with little time to dedicate to improving their web presence, getting a high profile in the search giant's rankings remains a mystery.
But Cutts has spilt the beans on the fundamentals of SEO, with his top five tips to help newcomers get started and their websites featuring more prominently in Google's search results.
He first suggested businesses think about what keywords users were likely to use to find their site.
Then make sure, he added, that those keywords appeared on the website and to weave them into the text a few times to ensure Google knew what the website was about.
The title and description tags, he stressed, should also feature those keywords.
But Cutts warned readers about the dangers of keyword stuffing and that overdoing it on keywords would have the opposite effect.
He also emphasised the importance of links and blogs as ways of increasing a site's popularity and suggested using free tools, such as Google Maps Local Business Centre, to extend a site's visitor potential.
