Double-digit market share for Bing
Microsoft's Bing has captured 12.7% of the search engine market within just 12 months of its launch according to a new report by industry analysts.
Despite its rapid growth however, Google still has a 62.6% and Yahoo 18.9% but the figures from ComScore give search engine optimisation professionals plenty of food for thought.
At a recent summit to discuss Bing's progress, Microsift executives admitted that there was a long road ahead for the search engine.
Meanwhile Greg Sterling, contributing editor to industry website Search Engine Land has said that Google is very entrenched in the culture and in people's behaviour and that is a tough nut to crack.
However, if Bing takes a long-term view it can make greater inroads than they have. Sterling went on to say he didn't know if Bing could get beyond 30-40% of the search engine market, but if it could get to 20% plus, that would be a big win for Microsoft.
When Bing was launched in June last year it was billed as a decision engine with a consumer friendly approach, concentrating on popular topics like travel, entertainment, news, maps, weather and shopping.
Microsoft has also said it has become more focused about its mobile strategy and six months ago it launched a widget for the iPhone which has been downloaded by 4.3 million users in the US.
It's clearly an area where growth in search is occurring and in terms of strategic importance, it is near the top for Microsoft, said Erik Jorgensen, the company's senior vice-president for mobile.
