Facebooking yourself out of a job

In recent years social networking has exploded. To the internet generation the likes of Myspace and Facebook are a second home. But many account holders are not enabling the public security settings tightly enough.

How would you feel if your social networking site was affecting your career prospects or even being used against you in your search for a new job. All too often if you search for someone's name in a search engine their Facebook, Bebo or Myspace account comes up. Unless your name is John Smith, or another commonly used name, then chances are your social networking account might appear higher for your name than you do.

Of course this isn't necessarily a problem, unless of there are embarrassing pictures and inappropriate comments on your account or friends accounts that could be seen by your boss or prospective employer. In the past celebrities and politicians were the only people that had to worry about their public relations. Now everyone should consider what they allow to become visible, putting something on the internet for your friends doesn't always stay away from your professional profile.
