Facebook opens up profiles to search engines
In a move which is expected to reignite the fierce debate over internet privacy - Facebook is making its members’ profiles available to search engines.
The move will effectively make member profiles on Facebook public, enabling non-members to find out who has a profile on the site.
Facebook has defended the move, stressing that privacy rules are not changing.
A statement by the company said it is making limited public search listings available to people who are not logged in to Facebook.
It also said that the website is not exposing any new information and people have complete control over public search listing. The company thinks this will help more people connect and find value from Facebook without exposing any actual profile information or data.
Observers think the statement may have been an attempt to pre-empt criticism, which has previously been levelled at the site.
Until the change of heart by Facebook, only its members were able to find profiles, but non-members will be able to scour the site.
Search engines such as Google and Yahoo! will feature the listings as early as next month.
