Firefox 3 launches amid server meltdown
Mozilla celebrated the much-anticipated release of version 3.0 of its Firefox browser with a publicity stunt to set the record for greatest number of downloads in a single day. But the launch very nearly backfired on the non-profit organisation as servers were unable to cope with the demand from potential downloaders.
Vice president of engineering at Mozilla, Mike Schroepfer, described its latest version as the biggest Firefox release by far.
He claims that the world's second most popular browser can render webpages about three or four times more quickly than its predecessor, Firefox 2.0, and by more than seven times the speed of Internet Explorer.
Along with a sleeker appearance, the revamped system comes with a raft of security enhancements and features designed to improve the user experience.
Mozilla has been keen to highlight its new killer feature, the Smart Location Bar, which does away with much of the need to bookmark or remember previously used web addresses.
When the user types text in the address bar, the feature can identify from the browsing history what the user is looking for- described by Schroepfer as the biggest user experience change since tabbed browsing.
Mozilla has also beefed up security with a switch in emphasis towards preventing malware attacks.
