First literal internet revolution?
The phrase internet revolution to describe the latest developments in the world of online technology may be somewhat overused but the last few weeks have seen what may prove to be the first literal internet revolution.
All over the world people are monitoring unfolding events in Iran, where the election victory by the incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is being challenged on the streets, via the internet.
Despite the best efforts of the Iranian government to disrupt communications with the outside world, citizen journalism appears to be thriving on the web.
Through social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as hundreds of blogs and YouTube uploads, ordinary Iranians are getting their message across as well providing pictures of protests on the streets of Tehran and other cities.
Most importantly, these new online channels provides a means to bypass the heavily censored official state media whilst providing much needed information for foreign journalists confined to their offices or hotel bedrooms.
In doing so they are enabling people inside Iran to expose the failings of the existing regime and could ultimately bring it crashing down amid a wave of popular protest unheard of since the days of the Shah.
Unlike the 1970s however, this time around any revolution would be watched, as it happens, by millions of people across the world, live on the internet.
