Gateway pages -smoke and mirrors

Just had a far from entertaining conversation regarding a site that has been previously SEO'd. On the face of it it looks ok, it has had a massive amount of auto generated content that is "optimised" for rankings. That said it brings back memories a practice that really should have been retired years ago.

After all why create gateway pages when if you put the site together properly in the first place, the need for gateways wouldn't exist because the content on the page would have provided everything that was needed.

What was disappointing was the fact that this SEO (who will remain nameless) appears to have centred the entire campaign on these gateways and has done absolutely nothing with regard to links.

I get really frustrated with this because it would appear the SEO service was sold utilising smoke and mirrors with double glazing sales tactics, With the Top SEO's, the likes of SEMPO, and shows such as SES and SMX preaching how it is supposed to be done, I'm just astonished that people are still being taken in by such SEOSharks.
