Google casts net out to seaGoogle is considering taking to the high seas in a bid to reduce the costs of running its data centres.
The search giant is one of several IT companies that are looking at new ways of cutting down on the huge amount of electricity needed to run their supercomputers and has lodged a patent application for a water-based data centre.
The company is investigating the idea of an offshore fleet of data barges that would harness the power of the sea to generate electricity to power its servers and pump the water needed to cool them.
The internet is not as green as we'd like to think, with data centres already accounting for about 1% of the world's electricity consumption.
As the volume of information exchanged online continues to mushroom, experts are predicting that by 2020 the internet will have a bigger carbon footprint than that of the airline industry.
If Google decides to go ahead with the idea, its maritime data centres would enjoy offshore status, meaning that the company would also cut down on its property tax bills.
The proposals have prompted industry concerns about how the vessels would cope with severe weather conditions, such as a hurricane.
