Google could be hit by Indian security clampdown
Search engine Google could be the latest firm to fall victim to a security clampdown in India, with authorities there demanding access to all data stored by telecoms companies.
The BBC has reported an Indian Home Ministry official as saying that any company with a telecoms network should be accessible, including Google and Skype.
The move follows high-profile talks with Research in Motion, makers of Blackberry mobile devices, about ways to allow Indian security forces to monitor data.
Industry commentators have said that the Indian government's new focus on snooping powers is down to increased fears of terrorism whilst others say the authorities are simply working its way down a to-do list following the passing of the the ICT Act of 2000, which was revised in 2008.
Although the moves may not have a direct impact on Google's search engine business, the tightening of the rules is likely to affect its Gmail service, which uses powerful encryption.
There may also be an impact on Search Engine Optimisation, with efforts to hinder the growth of the world's largest search engine company in such an important, fast growing market.
