Google increases market share
Google has hit a new peak with its market share of searches increasing to 59.8% in the US, according to the latest stats released by internet marketing researchers comScore.
At the same time, its biggest rivals Yahoo! and MSN have seen their market share dip to new lows, registering 21.3% and 9.4% market shares respectively.
The only other two search engines with significant clout, AOL and Ask, are hovering just shy of 5% of market share each.
The comScore findings nevertheless present a rosier picture for Yahoo! and Microsoft in terms of number of raw searches. Each engine has actually gained searches, increasing to 2.3 billion for Yahoo! and 1 billion for MSN.
The figures remain good news for the two search engines, which are locked in a stalemate over Microsoft's takeover proposals, as they are taking a slightly smaller slice of a much bigger pie and so increasing the earning potential for their advertisers.
The only reason the two have lost market share is that the number of queries Google is servicing, now at 6.4 billion in the US, is simply ballooning that much more quickly.
