Google confirms move to social networking
Google will take on Facebook and MySpace after it unveiled plans to launch its own social networking project. The search engine company is looking at developing a cross platform which will work with a range of other networks including business-focused sites such as LinkedIn, Plaxo, and Orkut.
The project, called OpenSocial, will allow web developers to build a standard set of applications that will work across these sites and it already has partners including Hi5, iLike and Oracle. However Facebook and MySpace, are not taking part.
The OpenSocial technology will also allow user data and friend lists to pass more freely between sites. This could break down the barriers between social networking services and hence prove more attractive for both advertisers and web developers looking to reach a wider audience.
Apparently, Google has sent an email to Facebook application developers inviting them to take part in a beta test, which would allow developers to embed Google Adwords into their work.
The move comes months after Facebook began allowing outside developers to build add-ons for the site, which users can choose to embed into their profiles. Its rival MySpace recently followed suit but neither of these tailor-made applications work outside of the sites for which they were designed.
