Google revamps custom business search

Google is to reach out to the corporate market by giving its customised business search a makeover with a range of enhancements, allowing businesses to offer searches to its visitors, which are tailored to their needs.

The number one search engine has introduced a raft of new features to its Custom Search Business Edition and renamed the service Google Site Search.

Customers are able to set up their own search engine, with results weighted towards their chosen criteria such as specific dates and topics.

The searches will improve the user experience by returning more relevant results. However, the filtered pages will be ranked exactly in the same way as the main search engine.

Google Site Search will also do away with the need for webmasters to install and maintain the software on their own equipment, as Google will host the customised searches on its own servers.

Google's Enterprise Division said that the facility was targeted more for businesses and government sites that wanted search but didn't want to display ads.

It also said that website owners typically invested in good content,
search optimisation and advertising to attract customers, but often lacked a quality search experience once customers arrived.
