Google's Christmas crackdownGoogle has had a crackdown on malicious websites in a move designed to thwart cyber criminals from cashing in this Christmas.
According industry insiders, criminal gangs have been boosting the search engine rankings of their websites which contain malware so that unsuspecting users of search engines such as Google click on to these sites and their PCs become infected with a variety of viruses.
The malware – such as comment spam and blog spam - is used by the gangs to obtain information to be used in criminal activity ranging from identify theft all the way through to having PCs which are unwitting partners in crime.
Apparently Google has purged tens of thousands of malicious web pages from its index.
Alex Eckelberry, CEO of Sunbelt Software, was one of those who noticed a rising number of search results on Google which led to malicious web pages that expose visitors to exploits that can compromise vulnerable systems.
He said there is a large amount of seeded search results which lead to malware sites and they are using common, innocent terms. He added that one of his researchers landed on a malware site through searching for alternate firmware for a router.
