Google's new climate change of givingGoogle has outlined plans to give away more than $26 million through its philanthropic division to good causes, including climate change. The company - who insiders say has the unofficial slogan ‘don’t be evil’ – made the announcement that Google.org would be donating the money as it bids to expand charitable giving on a global scale.
Larry Brilliant, head of DotOrg, has been explaining Google’s generosity and said that it took 18 months for the company to come up with what it wanted to focus on and that it polled its employees around the world.
The company came up with five key areas it would like to help – with two of them being in the area of climate change. Projects will include an attempt to make electricity from renewable energy at a price cheaper than coal and an attempt to increase the market acceptance of electric cars and plug-in hybrids, with the idea they would be plugging into a greener grid.
Brilliant said Google was interested in poverty in the developing world because - he claimed - people want jobs as well as better government, public services, water and education for their kids.
In the area of health, Google has an initiative called Predict and Prevent and Brilliant said in the last 30 years there have been three dozen emerging new diseases and it would like to help to produce early warning systems that could help the world know where these hot spots are.
