Improved rankings just by adding content regularly

In a post two years ago we noted that rankings in search are affected by changes to your site.

Our tests were to take a site that was doing well for a search term and allow it to stagnate for 10 days. Its rankings dropped 3 - 4 points in the Google rankings. We added a page, in the form of a news article, and the rankings restored 2 - 3 days later. Allowing it to stagnate again, the site dropped once more.

We then started to introduce new pages regularly, eventually coming to a conclusion that rankings can be influenced by new content and the nominal frequency appears to me 2 to 3 times per week.

We have revisited this issue and found some changes.

Again we felt a well performing site for 10 days to stagnate. This time when we introduced a news article, instead of taking days to restore rankings, it was hours.

The results are not conclusive as we have only done the test a limited number of times, but will be continuing to test and exploring this relationship further over coming weeks.
