MS Office to fight Google in browsing backyard battle

Microsoft looks set to lock horns with Google in the software company's own backyard with plans to add browser functionality to its next version of MS Office.

The software giant has responded to the increasing popularity of Google Apps, a web-based suite of office software, by announcing that the next version of MS Office would allow users to work on their documents in a web browser.

The company said that it would be offering lightweight online versions of its Office applications in a bid to attract users who worked out of office and needed to access their business documents over the internet.

The question on the lips of search marketers is how Microsoft intends to charge consumers who want to use the browser interface in an online rather than local setting.

The company may well implement a charging model similar to Google Apps, which offers a paid package for business customers and also a free version supported by advertising.

Microsoft said the new applications would work on all three main browsers- Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari.
