Microsoft buoyed by Verizon mobile deal
Microsoft has finally got one up on bitter rivals Google and Yahoo with the news that Verizon has chosen the software giant as the default search partner on its mobile phones.
Verizon Chief Exec Ivan Seidenberg first broke the news of the deal, which was confirmed by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer in an announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
It's not yet clear how much Microsoft paid out to secure the deal, but it will be viewed as an important breakthrough for the Redmond company if it is to stand any chance of challenging Google in the mobile arena.
With the acquisition of regional mobile phone company Alltel, Verizon is set to become the number one mobile carrier in the US.
Critics have already voiced their views on the deal, many of whom see Google as the better choice and that customers would lose out on the superior user experience that Google has to offer.
They argue that Verizon made a mistake in its decision to partner with Microsoft, which could ultimately have negative implications for its business.
