Office File Server disaster recoveryYou know that feeling, you know you have been religious in your backup procedures, but there is always that element of doubt when it happens.
On Friday last week the power to our office was on one minute and off the next, ok maybe we should be running UPS' on our Internal File Server but when our last one failed it was in the plans to get it fixed, anyway live and learn. This afternoon (Monday) without warning the File Server shut down, on rebooting there was a sickening "phut" noise followed by a puff of smoke and a burning component smell.
"No problem!" I announced "Friday’s backup was sitting in an offsite fire safe".
On driving back to collect it I couldn't help but feel the cold anxiety of trepidation. Did it back up ok with the power outages Friday? Even if it didn't Wednesdays would still be good, or Mondays or push come to shove there is always last Fridays. Then you start thinking when was the last time the backups were checked? And restored successfully...you can go on forever. Good job it was just a short drive.
Anyway I'm pleased to say that the systems we have worked admirably. Our down time was limited only to the length of time it took to get the offsite backups and install them. It only goes to show when it comes to data and computers, just because it is there right now don't assume it will be there in 5 mins time. What are your recovery systems like, will they get you up and running quickly?
