Only half internet community uses search
Search engines could extend their reach and bolster their revenues - if they can find a way to tap into the huge volume of internet users who still do not regularly use search.
A survey of 2,251 American adults carried out by the Pew Research Centre has revealed that only 49% of people who go online make use of search engines every day.
But the good news for Google and its rivals is that this figure is steadily rising, representing a growth of 69% since 2002 when only a third of those who used the net were daily making search queries.
Email remains the most popular online app, with 60% of internet users checking and sending messages on a typical day.
The research also highlighted how the popularity of search correlated with social factors, such as education and income.
Internet users with a higher level of education are most likely to use search, with 66% of college graduates using a search engine every day. This compares with 32% of those with just a high school education.
Search engines are also more popular with higher earners. Of the internet users who earn more than $75,000 (£38,000) a year 62% search the web each day. By contrast, only 36% of those earning less than $30,000 (£16,000) use a search engine daily.
