Recession presents opportunity to embrace the internet

Even the biggest and most successful names on the internet are not immune to the current economic downturn.

Yahoo! has recently announced another round of job cuts as a result of a slump in advertising revenues and profits during the first quarter of 2009.

The Web portal says total revenues fell 13% to 1.6bnUSD (1.1bnGBP) in the three months to March 31, with advertising revenues dropping 12%.

The company says it is to cut another 675 jobs, equivalent to about 5% of its workforce, in addition to the 1,000 positions it axed last January and the 1,500 lost in October.

The stark news reminds us that, regardless of size, almost all companies need to fundamentally review their business plans.

But for many this review may be long overdue and could actually lead to greater success in the future.

One key area that businesses need to address is the way they market themselves and ensure that every penny they spend delivers a measurable result.

Fortunately the internet has provided firms with an opportunity that has not been available to struggling companies in previous recessions.

Search engine optimisation provides one of the most cost effective means of raising your profile, while there are plenty of web-based tools to analyse website visitor numbers and the business they then generate.

What's more, businesses that rise to the challenge of utilising the potential of the internet not will be in an even better position than their competitors once the economic recovery begins.
