SEO is for the long haul

Companies need to start thinking about SEO as a long term part of their marketing strategy if they are going to generate successful and quantifiable results.

That is the view of Steve Haar of Leapfrog Online who believes that companies who treat SEO as a one-time hit do not seem to understand why their project are not successful.

In order to help firms plan their SEO more effectively, Haar outlines five key points:
  • Plan to keep in it for the long haul – a meaningful campaign should be a 12 month period
  • Be patient - as SEO can take time to generate results because unlike other forms of marketing there is no immediacy about organic SEO
  • Set objectives – so that there are clear and realistic benchmarks
  • Keep people informed – as they need to know your plans and those of the company especially as new products or product changes impact on a website
  • Set expectations – companies who outsource SEO are advised not to jump for promises of absolutes, as there are none.

I couldn't agree more with Steve on this, as we approach Christmas, many online stores will have their busiest period making this make or break time. If you aren't thinking about a Search Engine Optimisation Project for next Christmas now, waiting until the summer could be too late.
