Search engine celebrates Chinese license renewal
As a generic group SEO's will be relieved at news that the Chinese government has renewed Google's licence to operate in the world's fastest growing market.
The news follows speculation that China would revoke the licence after the search engine giant began redirecting Chinese users to its unfiltered search site in Hong Kong.
Google sought a compromise by saying it would no longer automatically redirect Chinese users, instead, they would be sent to a landing page, which would send them to the Hong Kong site.
David Drummond, a lawyer for Google is reported as saying that the company was very pleased that the government has renewed its internet content provider licence and was looking forward to continuing to provide web search and local products to its users in China.
Although no details of the deal surrounding the licence have been announced, its renewal is key to Google. China already has more internet users than any other country - despite relatively low penetration - and being shut out of the country could harm the company's future growth prospects.
In fact the whole internet marketing industry will be celebrating the news as more businesses turn to China to find new customers.
Google has had a long history of fall-outs with the Chinese authorities. Earlier this year Google said it might pull out of China following a cyber attack that it believes originating from the country.
