Star's death highlights importance of the internet
The tragic death of Michael Jackson has revealed just how important the internet has become when it comes to finding the latest information on breaking news stories.
In the days that followed Jackson's cardiac arrest at his Los Angeles home, millions of internet users turned to the web to catch up with the latest news and to share their tributes to one of the world's most iconic, if controversial, stars.
Recently published figures suggest that 70 out of every 100 Google searches related to the star, whilst it's trends page rated the topic as volcanic.
However the event also highlighted possible failings in the Google's system with computers running it's news section interpreting the Michael Jackson searches as a virus attack and, for around half an hour, users got an error page.
Despite this, Jackson's sad demise highlighted the diversity of the internet as a medium for sharing information, something that the tradition press just cannot compete with.
TouTube, for instance, set up a dedicated site within hours. It listed his 28 most popular internet hits with Thriller in top stop having been watched by more than 38 million people.
Meanwhile his death featured on 22.6% of Twitter posts, reaching a further 100,000 people, whilst the BBC reported that UK traffic to its website increased by 72% in the early hours of Friday, June 26.
What's more, technology is helping his music to race up the sales charts with seven of his albums amongst the top ten downloads on iTunes!
