Surfers want content and search
A study has found a significant increase in the amount of people who say that content and search are the main reasons why they use the internet.
There has been a 37% rise in the number of people who say they use the internet for content and a 35% increase in search.
The Internet Activity Index (IAI) was compiled by Online Publishers Association (OPA) to compare attitudes between 2003 and this year. It found that commerce was the biggest loser with a 28% drop.
OPA president, Pam Horan, said when it created the IAI, its goal was to provide a reliable, ongoing measure of the time being spent with key online activities.
She added that for the last four years, the IAI has identified important trends in Web use and added to its understanding of consumer engagement online.
The increase in content's share of time has been fairly steady in the last several years, growing 10% from 2003 to 2004, remaining even between 2004 and 2005, growing 13% from 2005 to 2006, and growing 13% from 2006 to 2007.
Horan added that the IAI has identified a very significant and sustained trend that highlights how consumers are spending their online time.
