TV search cuts out junk resultsThe leading US TV magazine is launching a new online search portal because results from websites such as Google and Yahoo! throw up too many meaningless choices. TVGuide.com has launched its Online Video Guide in a bid to filter out lots of the junk that appears in the results from the main search engines. It will give users the best internet video that is related to television. The TV magazine is introducing the service to help people wanting to find the latest information on programmes such as 24, Heroes, Lost and Prison Break. The boss of TVGuide.com, Paul Greenberg, said it is filling a niche that Google and YouTube are not because they are not strictly TV-focused. He cited the fact that as many as 70% of YouTube users are seeking professional content and not the user-generated video that made YouTube famous. Many shows are available free and on-demand from the websites of the network’s which make the programmes and the TV Guide drives traffic to them. At present it does not receive a revenue from it but Greenburg says he is talking to content holders in order to cut deals for a small slice of the advertising revenue. Comment:
