Take care when using social networking sites

News that a Swiss woman has been sacked for using Facebook when she had claimed to be too ill to use a computer provides another reminder of the importance of caution when using social networking websites.

The unnamed woman was suffering a migraine and had told her employer, Nationale Suisse, she needed to lie in a darkened room.

The company said its discovery that she was also using Facebook destroyed its trust in her and prompted her sacking.

In the UK there have also been several cases of employees facing disciplinary action - or worse - for posting negative comments about their workplace online.

But it's not just individuals who need to be aware of the dangers of making comments online. Social media and online marketing techniques have become increasingly important to businesses as an effective method of reputation management.

In recent years many executives have been posting blogs, utilising Twitter and even developing their Facebook profile as an effective way of raising their profile, drawing attention to their products ad services and establishing themselves as an expert in their field.

However, whilst the benefits are obvious, the potential pitfalls are often forgotten.

As with many aspects of life, the temptation is to save money by doing the work your self. But when your thoughts and comments are going to be posted online for the whole world to see, it pays to seek out expert advice.

What's more, to respond to potential negative comments about your business, its essential to constantly monitor what's being said about you on the world wide web.
