Early morning SEO call, tarnished the rest of the day

It may be early-ish on a Monday morning but already I've had a lengthy conversation with someone about what not to do in optimising a website. They say a little knowledge is dangerous and with this one it was positively sublime. So I thought I'd repeat myself here so the next time I get such a call I can send him to this page, saving myself half an hour of my life and an awful lot of breath trying to undo "what a mate" had told him.

The basics still exist, Content, Architecture, Credibility.

Content
Having a page that is relevant to what you want to be found for might seem to be a bit of an obvious requirement, but you'd be amazed how many site owners get it wrong.

Architecture
Having well crafted optimised pages is on thing, but if the search engine spiders cannot get to the page then you have a problem. Ensure you can navigate to every critical page, with href links, ideally within 2 clicks of any entry point.

Credibility
Otherwise known as links, yes you can spam blogs, forums, site wides, exchange and for the most part some of these do still work but why bother? The future of credibility is about creating content people want to link to, or else by producing valuable content that is disseminated around the internet, because of its inherent value, and linking back.
