Engine Optimisation Web Log (BLOG) | This News Blog is dedicated to bringing news, information and innovations targeting the Search Engine Optimisation industry.
FaceBook Bandit likes your status update. With the eruption of Social Networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter on the internet, it wasn't going to take long for members of the criminal underworld to capitalise on this new wave of openness. With more and more people expressing their plans, purchases and practices on these web sites, they are leaving themselves prone to the scum prowling the web. There was much furore with people leaving personal details such as birth dates and birth places on their profiles, enabling ID fraudsters to steal their identities, but there was little talk on the more basic thief, the house burglar. Stories are starting to emerge of victims who have had their properties attacked whilst they have been enjoying vacations etc, after posting their plans on sites such as Facebook. It can seem an innocent way of keeping family and friends informed on your day-to-day life, but to a criminal, it's like internet shopping. They can keep tabs on the expensive purchases you have boasted about, and when you will be leaving for various functions. This should serve as a stark warning to the Web 2.0 generation, who can update their status from wherever their phones will allow. Is it wise being so open and vocal with your life? Advertising your life around your town centre would be borderline insane, so why do we feel so safe on the World Wide Web?
