Look forward or be crushed

"If you look backward in this business, you will be crushed. You have to look forward," said Steve Jobs when asked about celebrating the Mac's 25th anniversary.

The co-founder of Apple may have been talking about his reasons for not celebrating the milestone in computer history, but his words will resonate throughout the IT world.
Whether you work on hardware, software updates or web development, there is only one direction to look-forward.
In the 25 years since the Mac was first introduced, technology has transformed the word and the rate of change looks set to accelerate still further over the next quarter of a century.

Back in 1984 the internet was unheard of but now it has transformed the way the businesses, and many individuals, go about their day-to-day business.
Like the world of computers it is constantly evolving. It may be a cliché but we often say that something is out of date the minute we buy it.
This may be true of hardware, but it also typifies the world of the internet and particularly online marketing.

What may have worked yesterday may not work tomorrow- or even today - and that's why businesses need to constantly review their strategies.
But they should see this evolution as a source of opportunity, not a threat, and look at online marketing as an ongoing process rather than a one-off outlay.
That way they can avoid being crushed after falling into the trap of believing that what worked yesterday will bring similar success tomorrow.
