Microsoft Rebranding Search... Again

Over the past few years we've enjoyed the likes of Microsoft Search, MSN Search, Live Search, Windows Live, and now Microsoft may finally have a brand for their search product. Kumo.

For the mean time, this is the code name for the beta of the product. At least, we hope this is the case due to the luke warm reaction it received upon first release.

Currently, Kumo appears to only work for Microsoft employees. To view some screenshots of Kumo, please visit Danny Sullivans blog post over at Search Engine Land.

From what we've seen, Kumo seems to be aimed more towards user intent. For example, a search for Taylor Swift will return "refined" links along the left hand panel, such as her songs, lyrics and biography.

This isn't a new piece of technology by any stretch of the imagination. Google already has a certain level of refinement in use, along with lesser known engines such as Clusty.

I'm sure time will tell whether this rehashing of old and used technology will finally help Microsoft make a dent in the market share of Google and Yahoo. But if the name is anything to go by, Google is safe for another 10 years or so.
