Does news and blogging have a role for business sites?

We all know that whilst an image speaks a thousand words, when it comes to search engines the thousand words are more useful. By writing text content for your web site it provides “spider food” for the search engines to read and assess the page relevancy against other sites with similar content.

However, many site owners build their sites to a finite level with no system for continued content. How many web sites remain remain static for years, or worse still how many sites do you see with out of date entries?

There is no doubt that sites that are perceived as authoritative usually have content additions regularly. This doesn’t mean new products have to be added continually; more often what it takes is either a news or blog area.

In a recent study conducted by research company Loudhouse, they found that 50% of UK companies either have a blog or encourage employees to contribute to them.

They also identified that over 30% of the businesses surveyed stated that their blog had generated “significant” business opportunities.

But blogging and news areas require a disciplined attitude. There is nothing worse than seeing a blog/news area which has a lot of contributions at the start, only to peter out over time to a point where it shows how uninterested the company has become in its own web site.

So when it comes to content from blogs and news, keep the stories flowing. But unless they are time sensitive, schedule them to provide 2 to 3 stories a week over a longer period. Anything beyond that will not necessarily improve the appearance of authority. But certainly a drying up of additional content will be seen quickly by the search engines and visitors alike.

If as a business you can only envisage devoting the time to create one story a week, consider a fill in service from a PR agency or specialist news feed supplier.
