PageRank Update

Last week was full of speculation regarding a PageRank update. It started with a number of sites - particularly directories and paid inclusion sites dropping in PageRank. Over the weekend PageRank has indeed updated unilaterally. Whilst there have been some high profile drops in PageRank, on the whole the update has been fairly positive.

Link Storm - in a tea cup

The saga continues this week with much speculation regarding Google and “paid links”. Since the beginning of Google it has been all about links, and the amount of “juice” that can migrate from one site to another because of a link. The lowest form of wit, don't forget the emoticons

Since the beginning of electronic communication, the use of emoticons has become more and more important. A former colleague of mine had a very sarcastic sense of humour, but refused to use any indicators as to what his mood was. Richard Oppenheimer and I had the very same conversation only yesterday, which he goes on to reinforce how the new forms of messaging can cause significant issues if not used with care.

Newsletter - Higher Rankings Through News and Blogging

For two years now we have advocated that websites need to change on a regular basis. Whether it be by having a blog or a news area, this in itself can be quite difficult. Especially as the discipline required to create new and interesting content on a regular basis, gets more arduous over time. The theory is, that to the search engines a site that is adding to its content every couple of days must be loved by someone. If it is actively receiving contributions it must be up-to-date and current. To the search engines this reinforces that the site has authority.

Why Search Engine Ranking is Like the NHS Waiting List

OK, so the optimisation process was a raging success. You’re number one worldwide for Lem-Sip flavoured dinnerware. Return to your office and prepare for profit. Don’t rush, it could be a long time coming. Search engine ranking is a key performance indicator; it isn’t an outcome. It’s all too easy to forget what we’re actually aiming for and treat symptoms, not causes.
